Join the Broomhall family for their perfect Christmas morning at home — Posey’s festive guide to slow starts, sparkly trees, and nostalgic rituals around the lounge room. For Posey, the season is all about family, food, and a little festive chaos wrapped in twinkling lights. From their much-loved Christmas Eve bash (complete with cheeky elves and plenty of bubbles) to slow, sleepy mornings in matching PJs, every moment is steeped in love, laughter, and tradition. Her home, styled with warmth and nostalgia, is where the magic truly comes alive, one ornament, carol, and cuddle at a time.

What’s your ultimate Christmas eve festivities?
On Christmas Eve we have our annual Christmas Eve party. Every year we open our home to our friends and family. We organise kids’ entertainment – usually an elf that Santa has sent to play with the kids if they’ve been well behaved. While the kids play, the adults have fun too.
My cousins and aunties all help us hand out food. In the week beforehand I make my version of homemade sausage rolls, and I’ve learnt how to make my auntie’s mini quiches. My other auntie brings the best chicken sandwiches. We have lots of bubbles until everyone has to head home to put their kids to sleep before Santa comes.

How do you like to set the scene on Christmas Eve to make sure the magic feels alive come morning?
Once all our friends have left, we put the kids into their Christmas PJs – yes, Kip&Co, we’ve been buying them for years. I’ve made up their bunk beds with Christmas bedding, which makes their room feel extra magical.
We put out carrots, cookies and a beer for Santa, of course. Once the kids are asleep, if any toys need assembling, Marc and I have a drink while we get it all sorted.
Although two years ago, when it wouldn’t stop raining, we were up until 2am building a basketball ring. And by “we”, I mean Marc – and it wasn’t so funny at the time! This year I’m aiming for already-assembled gifts.

Describe to us what a Broomhall Christmas morning looks like!
On Christmas morning, one of the kids always gets up way too early. It might sound mean, but we make them cuddle us in bed and try to get them back to sleep so they can last the whole day. And when I say early, I mean like 4:30am haha.
Around 6:30am, once everyone has climbed into our bed for cuddles, Marc makes me a much-needed coffee in a Christmas mug and we head in to see what Santa has brought everyone. Oh, and yes – both Marc and I are in Christmas PJs too, of course.
The kids open Santa’s presents first and then we give them ours, and Marc and I swap presents with each other. We have breakfast and stay in our PJs for most of the morning. My in-laws come over to see the kids and have a coffee.
Because we normally host Christmas Day too, I try to be organised so I don’t have to do too much before everyone comes, and I can actually enjoy the morning with the family.

How do you keep the morning relaxed and joyful, even amidst the chaos of gifts, breakfast, and family chatter?
My secret to staying calm and happy on Christmas morning – even while the kids are going wild with presents and the thought of hosting lunch is swirling in the back of my mind – is to be beautifully organised. A few days before, I set the table so it’s all ready, twinkling and festive for when our guests arrive on Christmas Eve.
The veggies are peeled and tucked away in the fridge, and all the serving plates are stacked in the cupboard with little notes on what will go where – veggies, meats, salads and all the trimmings. I started doing this a few years ago, and it’s turned the day, especially the morning, into something much softer and more enjoyable.
Somewhere in between the chaos of the presents and everyone arriving for lunch, I try to steal a little moment to myself. I pour a glass of bubbles and play my mum’s favourite Christmas carols. She passed away a few years ago, and Christmas was our thing. We both loved it. Even when I was a child and it was just her and I waking up on Christmas morning, it was always special and exciting.
I lay out the kids’ outfits and mine too, ready for the magic of the day. It might sound a little over the top, but it means I get to slow down, soak up the cuddles, the excitement and the chaos, and really be in those Christmas morning moments without feeling stressed.

What are your favourite sounds, smells, and tastes of Christmas day?
You’ll hear Christmas carols playing very early in our house – I’m that person who absolutely loves them. Anyone from Sabrina Carpenter, who has become a new favourite, to Michael Bublé, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra (all my mum’s favourites). And then there’s How to Make Gravy – Marc and I love that song. It’s what we play once everyone leaves on both Christmas Day and Christmas Eve, and we have a little dance together.
It’s always a hot meal in our house on Christmas Day, and I love the smell of the roast in the oven and the crunch of a very well-cooked potato. It’s something my mum did perfectly and has passed down to me. Think: parboil, rough them up with a fork, then into the oven so they go all crispy and golden, almost like a chip. It’s those little traditions that make it feel like Christmas to me and bring back all the memories and feels.

What are your go-to tips for styling the Christmas tree?
Styling for Christmas definitely takes time – and honestly, it takes years if you’re starting from scratch. When I moved out of Mum’s and started my own Christmas collection, it really did take a long time to collect everything and piece it all together. I begged her and my auntie for some of Nan’s old decorations so we could have a few nostalgic pieces in the mix.
We now have a fake tree because we like to decorate early, and no matter what we did, we could never keep the real ones alive and looking good all the way through to Christmas Day. I start by making sure all the branches are pulled out properly (that honestly takes the longest!), then we do the lights, weaving them deep into the middle of the tree so you can’t see any of the cords.
Next, I add the baubles, spaced evenly throughout the tree, and then we finish with all the special keepsake decorations. Every year I buy something little and new to add to our collection. It feels like our tree tells our story now, one Christmas at a time.

How do you bring a sense of nostalgia into your Christmas decor?
I picked up the tradition of collecting a new decoration each year from my mum. We used to wander around Chadstone together and find something special to add to the décor every Christmas. One year we found this beautiful Santa and reindeer set that you place on a side table or above a fireplace.
Now, my favourite thing every year is setting them up above our fireplace. Fun fact: I tiled it in green tiles so it would always match that set, because I knew it would forever have pride of place there. A few of the reindeer are missing an antler or have been glued back together over the years – and that’s exactly what makes it all the more special. It holds all those Christmas memories in it.

How do you create a sense of magic for little ones?
Christmas magic to me is all about family, believing in the magic and talking to the kids about all Magical things like we actually believe in them too. I sometimes say to Marc, “You know, I forget that we’re actually Santa sometimes and that he isn't real when I’m talking to the kids.”
Christmas has always been a wonderfully happy time in our family, and I think it’s the tiniest things that make it feel magical. The phone calls to my auntie where she tells the kids she’ll pass their message on to Santa because she has his number. Dusty my daughter singing Christmas carols from October at the top of her very out of tune voice, The conversion of how it was my mums favorite time of year, The long lunches where everyone sits around the table with the kids and we all eat together, no matter the age. The second lunch a few days later with my cousins that feels like Christmas all over again, because we treat it just like the big day.
I think we create Christmas magic for our kids because we truly believe in what it does – it brings family and friends together. The magic of Christmas is in being together, and that’s what makes it feel so special.

What is on your gift list to give and receive this year?
I really want one of those screens on a stand that connects to your phone or iPad, so I can watch crappy TV shows while I’m cooking in the kitchen or lying in bed.
