Today on the blog, get ready to immerse yourself in a world of vibrant hues and colour frenzy as we step inside the home of illustrator and photographer, Instagram queen, and supermum, Cassandra Danson (AKA @our.home.le.fleur).
After the birth of her second child, Cass re-discovered her passion for painting and photography, and from then her creativity soared. Starting with a mural in her daughter's bedroom, she now sells her prints as decals worldwide, ensuring no white wall is left unturned!
Cass's love for colour radiates from every corner of her home, and we couldn’t be more excited to bring you along for the tour! Step inside for a sweet taste of rainbow living.
Hi Cass! We're such huge fans of your work and have been cheering you on from the start! For those who haven't discovered you yet, could you please introduce yourself and share what you do?
Hey guys! Thank You so much and you really have been here right from the very start! For those that don’t know me, my name is Cass. I’m a 32 year old artist/illustrator and photographer from Melbourne. I have two kids, Charlie(1) and Lola (4) and a lovely husband Matt who make up our little fam. I’m obsessed with colourful interiors and love to style up a storm in my own home (and sometimes others) and share it all online.
It’s no surprise you are a creative at heart, evident in your incredible designs, interior styling and photography. What has your creative journey been like to date and was this something you’ve always wanted to pursue?
Thank you so much for your kind words. I have always had a keen interest in photography and have practiced it on and off since I finished high school about 15 years ago. When we first moved into our home, I decided to start photographing my interior styling and sharing it on Instagram. I had no idea so many people would enjoy my photos and start following me.
My art journey began just a year ago after having my second baby, Charlie. I experienced a burst of creativity and felt the urge to express it through painting. The first thing I painted was a mural in my daughter Lola’s room (go big or go home, right?), and the online response was incredible.
We strongly believe in the power of color in the home (if you couldn't tell!) and are big advocates of dopamine decor. What do you love about colour and why is it important to incorporate it throughout your home?
I love how colour can completely change a space and bring out different feelings. I love how it can make a room feel happy, calm, or full of energy. Adding colour throughout my home has been important because it gives each room its own character and makes it feel welcoming. It also lets me show off my personality and style, making my home truly reflect who I am. For me, it makes our home feel lively and fun, making it a great place for my family and me to enjoy.
You’ve recently turned your playful and abstract designs into some pretty darn cute decals, perfect for adorning the walls of nurseries, kids’ rooms and other spaces in need of some love! What inspired you to turn your work into decals, and why do you think they're the perfect solution for white walls?
After painting the mural in Lola’s room I had a lot of people asking me to paint one in their own homes. Then I had someone suggest turning it into decals so everyone could enjoy. At first, I hesitated, but then I thought, why not give it a try?
After the huge success of my first batch, I started adding more designs to my collection, spending my nights drawing on my iPad. I wanted to create unique designs that were not on offer anywhere else. I now have 30 different decal designs available on my website and they have made their way into kids rooms all across the globe.
The kids' rooms are what dreams are made of! Do you involve your children in the styling and decor of their rooms? If so, how do you go about it, and what advice would you give to other parents looking to do the same?
Charlie is still a baby, so it's a bit difficult to involve him, but Lola is very engaged. She chooses the colors and themes for her playroom and bedroom. We change the decals in the playroom every few months, and she always picks the designs and helps me put them up. My best advice to any parent wanting to involve their kids in styling their spaces is to ask them what they want their room to be like. Then, take that information and make it as aesthetically pleasing as you can (since sometimes their ideas may not always have the best vibe). It's their room, after all, and you want it to feel like a safe, happy place. Letting them choose the decor, paint colors, etc., is a great way to get them involved and ensure they will love it.
School holidays are upon us! What are your top five activities to keep everyone busy during the break?
Well, my kids are not in school yet so every week is school holidays for me, but in our house arts and crafts are our go to.
Here’s some we love to do;
- Painting cardboard boxes
- Chalk drawing on the driveway
- Making cardboard people from the old toilet rolls
- Home made playdough
- Magic potions in the back yard (you can mix bicarb soda with glitter and sparkling water to make fizzy potions)
