Three nights, a Phinisi, endless turquoise water and some of the most spectacular marine life on the planet. Co-Founder Hayley Pannekoecke takes us to Komodo Island, one of her ultimate bucket-list escapes. Keep reading for Hayley’s guide to getting there, what to pack and why this seriously needs to be on your travel list.

Where are we going?
Komodo Island, Indonesia. Fly into Denpasar and then fly one hour east to Labuan Bajo, which is the gateway to Komodo National Park. From there, you jump aboard an iconic Indonesian boat known as a Phinisi and head out into the national park.

When should we go?
The best time to visit is April to October. This is a three-night trip that’s perfect to tack onto an Indonesian holiday, either on your way in or out. You won’t be disappointed!

What makes Komodo so special?
This is a national park, so get ready to have your mind blown. The reef and marine life are some of the most beautiful we’ve ever seen, with the area abundant with turtles, fish and dolphins.
There’s something pretty special about waking up, jumping straight into the water and spending your days exploring the islands and reefs before coming back to the boat to lounge on deck.

Tell us about life on Phinis.
This was truly one of the most relaxing trips we’ve ever done. You’re living aboard a traditional Indonesian Phinisi with all meals and activities included, so everything is taken care of. The days are basically spent swimming, snorkelling, exploring, eating, lounging on deck and taking in the incredible scenery. It’s the kind of trip where you completely switch off.

What should we pack?
Swimsuit! You are going to live in this. A mini bath robe is perfect for post-early-morning swims and yacht lounging, and a sarong is a must for all-day wear, from the beach to a boujee beach dinner.
I’d also pack a travel jewellery box, plenty of sunscreen and zinc, because you’ll spend the majority of your time on the boat deck or in the water. Slip, slop, slap! A good wide-brimmed hat is essential too.
And definitely bring something special to wear for a fancy beach dinner. There’s nothing quite like getting dressed up with your feet in the sand.

What was the highlight?
Honestly, the whole thing. The marine life, the reef, the islands, the boat and just how relaxing it all is. There’s something very special about being out on the water for a few days with nowhere else to be. It’s an absolute bucket-list trip.

Any final words?
If you’re heading to Indonesia, tack it on. Three nights in Komodo is the perfect little adventure and you absolutely won’t regret it.
