Homemade Hot Cross Bun Recipe

The sweetest time of the year is here! As Easter approaches, there's no better way to welcome in the season than with the sweet and spiced delight of homemade hot cross buns.

Perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a simple afternoon snack, this recipe created by @meishaclaire will guide you through each step, ensuring your buns rise beautifully and are adorned with the signature cross.



Ingredients for dough: 

3 teaspoons instant yeast 

1/2 cup caster sugar 

4 and a 1/4 cups bakers flour 

2 tsp cinnamon 

2 tsp All Spice 

1 cup sultanas or dried fruit of choice 

zest of 2 oranges 

50g unsalted butter, melted 

1 egg (room temp) 

1 and a 1/2 cups warm milk 

Ingredients for crosses: 

1/2 cup plain flour 

5 tbsp water



Method

1. Mix all dry dough ingredients in a bowl. Mix in the saltanas, milk, butter, egg and orange zest. 

2. Knead dough by hand for 10 mins or use dough settings on mixer/thermomix for 5 mins. 

3. Place dough into bowl, cover and put in a warm spot to rise (double in size). 

4. Roll into a log and cut into 12 equal slices. Shape into balls and place into lined tray. Cover and place in warm spot to rise again (almost double in size). 

5. Mix together the flour and water for the crosses and pop into a zip lock bag. Snip the corner and pipe crosses. 

6. Cook in oven for about 20-25 mins at 180 degrees Celsius. Glaze with maple syrup and enjoy warm!
