Between The Sheets with Anna Spiro

Truth is, we’re all a little weird in the bedroom (no, not like that…). We’re talking about the good stuff — the real, unfiltered, between-the-sheets quirks that make us who we are.

The doona hogging, midnight snacking, late-night Googling, and questionable PJ choices we’d probably never admit out loud. Because if we’re honest, the bedroom is where the magic and the mischief really happen. It’s the place for whispered confessions, outrageous dreams, and those little rituals that never make it to the outside world.

This time, we’re pulling back the doona and stepping inside the beautifully layered world of Anna Spiro — one of Australia’s most celebrated interior designers, known for her joyful use of colour, pattern, and storytelling through space. With a life filled with design, writing, family, and creative thinking, Anna’s world is anything but ordinary. Anna is letting us peek behind the curtain and under the covers to share a few of the quirks and comforts that keep her inspired.

Hi Anna, thank you for letting us peek inside your bedroom! For those who are not familiar with an Anna Spiro print, can you share a little about who you are, who you share your bedroom with, and what a typical day looks like for you?

I’m an interior designer, author and textile designer, and mother of 2 sons. I share my bedroom with my husband, Luke and our 2 golden retrievers Walter & Betty.

Your home celebrates colour in every corner. What colours tell your story, and how do you use colour to shape emotion, memory, and meaning in your own space?

I particularly love the colours of the ocean. All shades of blue make me happy and remind me of swimming at the beach which is one of my favourite things to do. Colour is the greatest thing to create a certain mood in a space. I’m always drawn to colours that make me feel happy.

Your interiors are known for combining beauty, comfort, and a touch of the unexpected. How do you balance functionality with playfulness, especially when designing for adults who might be hesitant to take design risks?

Functionality is rooted in my designs always. Creating a floorplan layout that is efficient and also choosing furniture that is both comfortable and practical is of paramount importance. The colour and fun always comes after we’ve settled on a good solid plan and chosen furniture that is both comfortable, functional and good quality.

What’s on your bedside table right now, anything you’re reading, surprising or sentimental?

My notebook and always a pile of design books and magazines.

Do you have a pre-bed ritual (book, playlist, skincare, journal) that helps you unwind for the end of the day?

I write things down in my notebook, face cream, magnesium spray on my feet to help me sleep and a bit of reading.

What’s the one thing in your bedroom you absolutely cannot live without?

My husband.

What is your favourite midnight snack? Is it a secret indulgence?

The fruit jube lollies from Haigh's Chocolates.

What’s the most creative idea you’ve ever had lying awake at night?

Every night there’s a plethora of ideas. I have my best ideas always in the middle of the night and that’s why I have my notebook handy always and why I always like to sleep on an idea.

Describe your bed in three words.

Heaven, safe, warm.

What’s your favourite little “luxury” in the bedroom?

My cashmere blanket.

If we opened your wardrobe right now, what colour or item would we see the most of?

Jeans.

Is there a fragrance you associate with rest or winding down?

Lavender oil.
